The Greater Flamingo is a large species that resides in various parts of the world. The species is most commonly found along the coasts of West Indies and sometimes enter the airspace of Florida. The Greater Flamingoes can also be found in the east coast of India, and some parts of Africa.
Greater Flamingoes can be divided into two categories: the ones which are bright red in colour are found in the regions of the West Indies and east cost of the United States and Latin America. The ones which are relatively less bright and have a pink shade are found in the regions of South Asia.
PROS OF MIGRATION OF GREATER FLAMINGO:
- Water Bodies:
The water bodies where the greater flamingoes migrate become live and the population of other animals in that region is also considerably enhanced. The Greater Flamingoes contribute to the expectant life cycle of the fish in the water bodies and help in increasing their population and life span.
- Biodiversity:
The residents of the places where the Greater Flamingoes migrate learn more about their biodiversity upon seeing the birds migrate to the area. Since these birds are very bright in colour and have a certain attraction to their sight, the locals of the areas they are migrating to start taking an interest in their surroundings.
- Better for Birds:
Greater Flamingoes migrate because they usually cannot take the perils of rough and hard climate. Hence their migration to a different part of the world enhances their ability to live because they find food and moderate climate. In this manner the species keeps itself alive and well.
- Geographical Distribution:
With the migration of Greater Flamingoes, the distribution of the bird population becomes better spread through the geographical landscape of the world. The Greater Flamingoes keep up their migration during the seasons of harsh climate and they usually travel to the more tropical part of the world.
- Better for Reproduction:
The migration of Greater Flamingoes ensures that they can reproduce and keep their species in existence. This happens because the Greater Flamingoes require certain conditions to reproduce. They cannot continue with their activities during the seasons of extreme harsh climate and in harsh unsustainable weather.
- Ecosystem:
The migration of Greater Flamingoes ensures the ecological system of the regions remain green and sustainable. The regions to which they migrate see a growth in fish population and a reduction in the number of rodents and insects, because the birds eat them. This contributes vastly to the development of environment.
- Role in Pollination:
Greater Flamingoes ensure that the regions they are migrating to also see a boost in the process of seed dispersion and flower pollination. These birds through their practice of moving the seeds and flowers ensure a boost in the life of flowers as well.
- Fertilisers:
Bird droppings are used as fertilisers for crops. Hence during the seasons of migration the production of fertilisers also increases. Bird droppings are used as the best form of fertilisers and act as manure for the crops. They are also inexpensive and boost the agriculture of the region.
- Ecotourism:
The migration of Greater Flamingoes to the different regions of the world also contributes to the development and growth of ecotourism and bird watching expeditions in those areas. This practice of bird watching naturally increases during the months of the migration of Greater Flamingoes. This contributes to the development of the tourism of the region.
CONS OF MIGRATION OF GREATER FLAMINGOES:
- Death of Flock:
Due to the terrible and harsh conditions several birds of the birds lose their life due to the immense distances that they have to cover during these months. The birds are always susceptible to the problems of human civilization and the degeneration of the economy contributes to this problem further.
- Danger from Poachers:
During the seasons of the migration of Greater Flamingoes the practice of poaching also increases since it is during these months that the terrible poachers illegally keep their guns up and try to make a quick fortune by ruthlessly killing the innocent birds of the flock.
- Regional Problems:
Just like there are several advantages to the regions the Greater Flamingoes are migrating to, there are several possible disadvantages to the region they are migrating from. This includes the loss of several ecological factors that may contribute to the flora and fauna of the particular region.
- Bird Diseases:
The migration of Greater Flamingoes form one region of the world to another also increases the possibility of the birds getting infected from various bird diseases that could contribute to the development of new problems for even the human civilization. Due to the ill practices of factories, birds migrating are likely to fall prey to disease.
- Risk of Bird Flu:
Due to development of the diseases that the Greater Flamingoes might be susceptible to during the seasons of migration, the birds may begin carry with them the scare of the disease that they are infected with to the various regions that they are travelling towards.
- Risk of Predators:
The migration of birds from one region to another, especially the migration of Greater Flamingoes ensures that there will be an increase in the number of natural animal predators as well. This includes the most common infestation of wolves in the regions of South East Asia. This is also a problem for the locals of those areas as they are susceptible to the threat of wild animals.
The migration of Greater Flamingoes from one region to another ensures that the birds that are supposed to find a better climate for themselves, do find a better climate for themselves. They contribute vastly to the development of the ecology of the region they are migrating to and ensure that the ecological system of the entire world remains balanced.
The migration of Greater Flamingoes is also a beautiful sight to see, with several documentary filmmakers wanting to capture the essence of their migration and beauty.
