In recent years, many schools have turned the dream of having iPads as a studying material classroom, into reality. Few schools have also brought them in through a 1:1 initiative and have been seen for a few pros and cons with the new, cool classroom technology.
Advantages of Using IPad in schools
Students love them
It is more than obvious that students will love iPads and they really do. iPads that are introduced in classrooms, also get even stubborn students engaged and excited.
Good battery life
The best part about iPads is their’ battery life. Generally, phones do not even give service for a day but these iPads never let one down. The mobile devices survive throughout the school day, without the battery draining off, which is an essential factor as to why it is used in schools.
Galore of Apps
IPads have the ability to interact with a variety of applications (apps). Apps nowadays are there for literally anything and everything these days alongside which, the apps related to education, keep on growing.
Introduction of e-books
IPads do eliminate the carrying of heavy textbooks, every day, to schools, which is also back-breaking. And also with the use of iPads, studying through e-books has made it even more interesting and enabling.
These also protect the environment and thus the ecosystem, by the reduction in the production of papers by cutting down trees.
Communication Tool
Coming across shy students who are shy and are not willing to speak up? This problem is now fixed.
One can use these as a polling tool while others can use it to let students ask questions or make comments during the ongoing lectures and point them out at that very moment or after the session (lecture). With the help of iPads, the bridge between the students and the teachers is burnt effectively.
Great content viewer
The introduction of iPads is the perfect device, that helps view content. This brings forth a great way towards experiencing the web, watching podcasts, and also videos. One can also read books and also for doing research.
User-friendly for the disabled
The having of many apps for even students who have cognitive disabilities makes it easier for the differently-abled ones, easier to carry out tasks. It has al the way helped the ones who have disabilities such as autism or any other disability.
Portable and light weighted
These iPads are pretty light-weighted, which makes it easily portable. Thus, the students can also take their homework or work for revision, home. Thus, this makes the work easier.
Fast as well as easy to be put to use
These iPads are pretty comfortable when it comes to using them. The screen touch and the system are very easy for every person to put it to use.
Disadvantages of using IPAD in School
Does not support flash
The greatest criticisms of the iPad are the lacking of the ability to work alongside applications like Adobe Flash and Javascript. Most of the content that is taught to the students, or given as assignments, are dominated by flash. Thus, this is one of the biggest shortcomings of the iPads.
Does not support USB Port
These iPads are very useful but, not having a USB port makes it difficult for simple works that can be done on a computer, difficult to be done on an iPad.
Multi-tasking not abled
In iPads, the worst shortcoming is that multiple windows or tabs cannot remain open, at the same time.
Expensive
The fact about iPads is that they are pretty expensive and cannot be afforded by every school or person. Thus, it does not give way to a smart technology-induced education system.
Limping on to other sites
Many- a- times, there is a distraction created by the different sites, in an iPad. Thus, when there is a distraction caused, the iPad becomes one of the biggest competition for the teachers.
Lack of production
iPad has a lot to offer. But, it does not give way to production. It is pretty good for light writing but is not available for quality content writing.
Typing issue
Typing on a real keyboard is easier and better than typing on the weirdly aligned keyboard on the iPad. Though, connecting the iPad to the wireless apple keyboard is a good idea in case one has to do long typings.
Cannot be shared
Just because only one person can log in at a time, these iPads cannot be used by more than one user. Thus, every student needs their own iPad and thus, increasing the budget.
Dependant on wifi
These iPads, being dependent on wifi, becomes a problem to be used in an area where there is little or no wifi connection.
Thus, the use of iPads in classrooms, while having the connection of wifi, can be used to go through many other websites, apart from the ones needed by them to study.
Not as enjoyable as books
Physical textbooks have their own interesting factors. Writing and drawing on paper has a lot of nostalgia attached to it.
You can highlight the important parts and also, the smell of new books! But, it is too mechanical with an iPad, as, we cannot touch it or decorate it when bored, during a lecture or highlight the important lines.
Not as economic as it is with regard to books
On the one hand, as the books are limited to a certain cost, iPads are not at all economic, because, they are very expensive. Books can be available to the common people, but, the iPad cannot be afforded by every individual.
Hindrance to learning
Fighting for the wifi to fight over the available sites on the internet, it causes hindrance in the path of learning, as, there comes a lot of distractions for a student. Thus, learning and learning quality is affected to a great extent.
Not as productive as libraries
Students gain more knowledge by sitting in the libraries, going through years of research, without any hindrance caused and thus, is far better than an iPad or any other online mode of education. The smell of new books and the tangibility of the books from the library are of greater value than the information
Issues with charging
On one hand, where books do not need charging and thus can be used anywhere and everywhere, iPads need charging on a regular basis. Thus, books are handier. During emergencies, while studying, one can easily refer to books but if iPads do not have charge, they become useless for the student.
Thus, note down all the positive and negative aspects of life, schools, teachers, academic counselors, and the whole education system should think twice before introducing iPads or any other form of education, other than textbooks, into the system.
Students should be kept in touch with the physical textbooks, in order to gain better knowledge and outgrow in their field of choice.
