21+ Pros and Cons of Veganism (Explained)

If you detest animal cruelty, then veganism is the wisest choice for you. Animals have been ruthlessly slaughtered by us down the ages. Several criminal practices have been encouraged to extract their meats, their furs and their tusks, horns or skins. These animal products have been used for commercial purposes both legally and often illegally.

Veganism is a practice that’ll keep you away from using animal products because vegans believe in the philosophy that animals shouldn’t be considered as mere commodities. Dietary vegans avoid consuming dairy products, meats and eggs; and ethical vegans refrain themselves from using any animal product.

Pros and cons of veganism.

Pros of Veganism:

  • Reduces the risk of diseases:

Certain chronic diseases can be totally avoided if you switch to a vegan diet. According to a report published by the ‘American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ back in 2009, vegans have lower cholesterol levels and BMI than meat eaters. Coronary heart disease too can be avoided because a vegan generally has low blood pressure. They rarely experience strokes and rarely suffer from colorectal cancer, diabetes (type 2) or prostate cancer. Long story short, if you want to keep yourself away from some deadly diseases, being a dietary vegan is the safest option.

  • You can lose weight:

Some dairy products are rich in calories. However, if you opt for a vegan diet, you can burn fat. Hence, if you want to lose weight and maintain that for a long period of time, a vegan diet is a wise choice.

  • Increase in antioxidant intake:

A vegan diet offers abundant antioxidant intake. You find an opportunity to devour lots of vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and legumes. These veggies are rich in vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.

  • Less animal cruelty:

With this practice, more and more animals can be saved. You can promote animal welfare and stop abuse to animals in factories and boutique farms. If you are an animal lover and most importantly an animal activist, then going vegan is something you are going to enjoy in the long run.

  • Prohibit illegal animal trade:

Illegal animal trade is a billion dollar business. Unlawful harvest and trade are practised through this obnoxious business. Skins, furs and tusks of animals are trafficked illegally by various business farms. If you are a vegan, you can stop this malicious commercial business strategy at least to some extent. With a small step, overexploitation of animals can be reduced.

  • Modify your kitchen schedule:

If you are planning to become a vegan, your entire kitchen routine will need a complete modification. You will have to cook some new dishes with veggies and fruits that can assure a healthy lifestyle. This whole process of re-learning is going to offer a new experience.

  • Self-control:

The initial phase can be a bit difficult but gradually you will be able to deal with your unavoidable meat cravings. You can amplify your self-control to a great extent and with time your body will be able to adjust to this new healthy eating plan. This sustainable choice is going to benefit you in the long run.

  • A sustainable eating choice:

Lots of vegetables are cheaper and even some of the veg dishes are quite affordable if you visit a restaurant. Vegetables are way more sustainable than some dairy products or animal meat. Deforestation can be controlled and avoided if you choose a vegan diet and if you manage to influence your relatives and peers to opt for this lifestyle as well.

Cons of Veganism:

  • Lack of essential nutrients:

Vegetables are indeed rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, but animal protein is equally necessary for a balanced diet. There can be a severe lack of essential nutrients if you go for a vegan diet. You may suffer from bone deficiency and loss of muscle power if you avoid sufficient intake of food items that are rich in protein. Lack of proper appetite, fatigue and constipation are some of the health-related troubles that you may face. Without sufficient amounts of vitamin B-12 and fatty acids, which we can obtain only from animal protein, we may suffer from weakness.

  • Eating junk food items:

If you are a vegan and if you often experience meat cravings, you may satisfy your hunger temporarily by eating unhealthy junk food items. Several new vegans who are still experiencing the transitional phase, go for junk foods that contain huge amounts of fat and sugar. Some vegan snacks apparently look healthy and tasty, but they may cause severe damages to your body.

  • People with inescapable health conditions:

You may think that a vegan diet can solve your complicated health issues, but it is not recommended for everyone. If you suffer from bone deficiency diseases or osteoporosis, high calcium intake is advisable. If you adopt a vegan diet, these health issues cannot be cured.

  • Dining out:

If you receive an invitation to an event or if you plan to eat at a restaurant, you may face certain practical problems. Your eating habit can annoy your companions and you may cause inconvenience to your family and friends. Moreover, certain occasions or restaurants may not offer you the vegan dishes you will look for. After a point, it may become an obligation for your peers and family members to cook vegan dishes for you.

  • Learn how to cook vegan dishes:

This is another practical problem that you are going to experience if you become a dietary vegan. You will have to change your entire kitchen routine, you will have to learn how to cook some new vegan dishes and most importantly you will have to look for some rare ingredients and spices at the grocery stores to prepare those dishes.

Going vegan is undoubtedly a healthy choice unless you have some health issues. Overall, it’s a noble pursuit and if you manage to avoid the cons of veganism as much as you can, then this practice has a lot of positive side effects. Become vegan if you’re an animal lover.
